
Advanced Clinical Skills Workshop (ACSW)
This 3-day workshop is intended for health care professionals looking to increase their level of comfort when faced with patients suffering cardio-respiratory emergencies. Included in the workshop is a review of practical anatomy and physiology, how to interpret cardiac rhythms, ECG interpretation, and scenario and case study based work. The workshop begins with an interactive anatomy and physiology review with emphasis on the parameters that affect cardiac output. The second day reinforces ECG interpretation skills with additional dynamic and static ECG interpretation exercises. Day three concludes with put together practice stations, personal best attempts using ECG simulators, a group-based written evaluation and a workshop evaluation.Common Medical Emergencies/Protocol Review
A methodical approach to common medical condition scenarios including chest pain, anaphylaxis, diabetic emergencies, respiratory emergencies, syncope, and seizures are covered in an effort to standardize the level of care given to patients that present with critical care emergencies. GMS staff will work with emergency procedures already in place and make recommendations as how to improve efficiency/competency.Learning Assessments
Developed to help groups identify education gaps, this session will survey a particular group of workers to assess skill levels before designing an education workshop. Using online or in-person survey results, Global will customize a workshop that will best suit your needs.Trauma
Designed for the rural health care provider, this 1-day workshop teaches the skills needed for rapid assessment, resuscitation, stabilization and transportation of trauma patients. Topics include drowning, chest trauma, abdominal trauma, head trauma, and spinal trauma. A Customized Trauma program can be modified to cover specific areas of concern and can also be lengthened into a 2-day workshop.Obstetrical Emergencies
This workshop is intended to increase the level of comfort of health care workers who generally work in an adult setting and are faced with an obstetrical emergency. The workshop will cover anatomy and physiology, labour and delivery, false labour, delivering the baby, neonate assessment, maternal assessment, and potential complications. Participants will learn that prompt recognition of a problem and rapid stabilizing management can lead to successful outcomes.Crash Cart Review
This workshop covers crash cart and emergency room review. It includes set up for resuscitation and also reviews the location of airway adjuncts, vascular access equipment, intraosseous, monitor/defibrillators, and resuscitation medications.
CPR Level ‘C’
CPR skills are the foundation for health care professional. GMS encourages all groups to have this section embedded into all of our programs. Chest compression, and ventilation techniques are reviewed for adult, child and infant victims. The most recent guidelines (2005) are followed.Automated External Defibrillators (AED)
GMS is the provincial leader in AED training. Having trained 1000s of students in AED since 1998, GMS has developed a program that can easily be integrated into all of our workshops. AED skills are complementary to CPR skills.Instructor Development Workshops
All GMS programs can be modified to help selected participants gain the skills necessary to become workshop instructors. Workshops range in duration from ½ day to Two days.
Wilderness First Aid
This 4 day program covers all minor to serious conditions including choking, respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest, severe bleeding, shock and care of the unconscious patient. Workers or students who require in-depth training on how to provide first aid and handle situations in the outdoors or wilderness that have the potential to be life threatening should take this workshop. Training is aimed at problem solving and understanding objectives rather than memorization of specific treatments for specific injuries. Basic wilderness first aid, is covered with an emphasis on assessing and stabilizing injuries or illnesses. Decision making based on injuries found, the environment, and group dynamics will also be covered.
