This one day workshop is designed to develop nurses’ knowledge and skills related to caring for a patient receiving procedural sedation / analgesia for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Participants will learn about the pharmacology of the relevant drugs and antagonists. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand the pharmacology of the drugs to be administered during procedural sedation and be familiar with relevant antagonists
- Demonstrate the acquired knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, cardiac arrhythmia recognition and complications related to Procedural Sedation
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills to assess the patient care requirements during Procedural Sedation and recovery, including the ability and knowledge to anticipate, assess and respond appropriately in the event of complications or undesired outcomes from both the procedure and the medications
- Demonstrate skill in airway management and resuscitation
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills to interpret and respond to ECG readings
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills to assess respiratory rate and airways patency and end-tidal CO2 reading as required
There is a growing body of evidence supporting the safe use of nurse administered deep sedation under the direct supervision of the physician. This workshop gives health care providers the necessary knowledge and skills to provide safe care for the patient receiving procedural sedation.

- Nurses from Emergency Departments, Ambulatory Care Centers, Non-Hospital Medical and Dental Facilities that care for procedural sedation/analgesia patients.
